Home > Regulatory Alerts > October 23, 2025 – Regulatory Reminder: Washington, D.C. Updates Pharmaceutical Detailer Licensing Requirements
Notification Date: October 23, 2025

As part of QPharma’s ongoing commitment to supporting life sciences organizations, we are providing this important regulatory update from the District of Columbia Department of Health regarding changes to Pharmaceutical Detailer licensing requirements.

Key Regulatory Change – Effective for Renewals Beginning in 2026

The District of Columbia has updated the expiration and renewal process for Pharmaceutical Detailer licenses.

Previous Requirement:
All licenses expired on the last day of February in every even-numbered year.

New Requirement:
Licenses will now align with each licensee’s birth month and birth year:

  • Licenses will expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.
  • The expiration year will correspond to the birth year (even or odd).
  • Example: A birthday of January 1, 1972, will result in a license expiring on January 31, 2028.

This change is already in effect for new licensees and will apply to all renewals beginning in 2026.

Ongoing Compliance Responsibilities

Pharmaceutical Detailers, Sales Representatives, and Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) must continue to:

  • Maintain an active license in accordance with D.C. regulations.
  • Complete required Continuing Education (CE) as part of the renewal process.
  • Monitor renewal dates closely to ensure timely compliance.
